I wasted a few decades of my life trying to live with the god-awful result of good advice from real professional musicians who prudently advised me that fifteen Watts was absolutely everything that I would ever want. I scarcely know where to start with such wisdom, people. Choices. You get a choice, a chance, a moment, and then you are gone. Life is short, think about that many times, every day that you are still here. That said, today I ordered a four EL-34, fifty Watt amplifier from PRS, Which I hope doesn't perform so poorly that it hurts to switch it on. The different Hundred Watt units here already are hitting close to the mark, but still left more room for improvement.

Silver for me. I have found that late 60s early 70s silver face amps are fantastic. Just as good in my opinion as the blackface versions. Yes there are some minor differences, but as far as sound goes, I have not heard a blackface that makes it worth the price difference. Also, for very little money a few caps and resistors can be changed to bring it to "blackface" specs if you really think it must be. I don't.

My theory is that it has too many features and people never had the patience to dial in all the available great tones. Step one: Don't choke it to much by turning down the master volume too much.

I mean the most obvious reason people used this was because it's easier for a guitarist to play, the bass has a larger scale length that you have to be used to in order to actually play well.

I just started on my bass 6 adventures….we used to play Helter Skelter with me on lead guitar, however, I want to do the bass-6 part……sounds incredible. Arguably, why even bother with a conventional 4-string bass?!?

The Revstar is well suited to your playing style. Surprised you didn't mention ELP in Mr. Powell's history. Did anybody do Pictures at an Exhibition at the CP tribute? I think that would be a really big way to honor him.

I was a toddler when that album came out. I still remember, even at that age, stopping in my tracks when my sister brought the album home and that track came up. Totally lit. Even 55 years later.

I can think of a few things. The only model variations are colours and pickups. Why no trem? The lack of locking tuners. The fact there's little or no discernable difference between the standard model and professional. So the revstar not only struggles to compete against itself (why pay £1000 more?) but also against a bunch of alternatives both at the standard price and the professional price. The truth is I pick a different guitar I want to try and buy practically every week and I rarely end up buying one because they all fail in some way and you can't try them first without travelling to Essex. So I generally end up just picking up the guitar I already have, play it for an hour and think "I should get a better one some day" Even though the Yamahas are perhaps a tad cheaper, price isn't that much of a factor. I mean, if I'm spending £800, then I'm not swayed massively if one guitar costs £699 or £719 and another is £850. Similarly if I'm spending £2k it's not that much different if I spend £1800 or £2100. Obviously the lower price is better but it's not the deciding factor at these price points. And especially at the moment because I'm seeing some big discounts on some guitars like the market is dropping. Brands like Ibanez have some amazing signature guitarists - and you can buy their actual guitar. Yamaha has a couple of amazing guitarists but they get custom shop guitars which aren't signature guitars. When I heard Matteo's tone I nearly bought a revstar with humbuckers. But, before I did I googled and noted from Yamaha's website his revstar has different hardware, locking tuners and, most importantly, different pickups - so he gets it. But I'm reluctant then, especially when no one else with the humbucker model is getting close to his tone. Similarly you make a guitar sound very nice, and maybe your pickups are stock, but it kind of dilutes the idea you play a revstar when you're not playing the same model we can buy right? Compare with the AZ Ibanez guitars I'm seeing Tom Quayle, Tim Henson, Martin Miller, jack Gardiner et al play. I can get the same one. At least as far I'm aware they're not doing a lot of changes to theirs. Steve Vai does a ton of changes to his PIA which makes me question calling the PIA a signature at all, but since that's in the £3k category, like Guthrie Govan's and not really a fair comparison. Really, if guthrie govan's japanese signature wasn't so ugly I would buy that. I don't understand because his £3.5 signatures are wonderful, but I don't want to spend that much and then harley benton manage to make a £380 guitar that looks as good as his but Charvel made the ugliest guitar I've ever seen as a cheap Guthrie Signature. Why? Is it just me? Do people actually like his MIJ Signature paintjob? Anyway if I decide to spend under £800 there's a bunch of guitars on the shortlist, and the revstar was definitely on that list for a time. Really my biggest fear with most of the brands at this price is seeing all the QC issues people have, especially with Ibanez. I believe Yamaha are actually typically better than most of the other Indonesian built stuff, but, as I say, if it had locking tuners, if there was a model with a tremolo, if the pull switch stuff was perhaps just doing what everyone else does instead of the transformer thing I'd have probably bought one by now. The other points it loses are the neck being thick (relatively speaking) and the weight because aesthetically they look great - I'd probably get the merlot or swift blue. If I decide to spend more, £2k then most likely it'll be Japanese built. You get a hard case on most of them (Strandberg don't even throw in a hard case if you pay £3k? And it's built in Indonesia? I mean who are they kidding?) and you hope the build quality is a step above. From there though it needs something doesn't it? Put branded locking tuners on it and some branded pickups and have a model that has a branded trem on it - and then I'd be thinking I have to get the professional instead of the standard and maybe I'd live with the weight and the neck. I know the neck is not fat per se, but I'm drawn towards other guitars that are much lighter and have thinner necks. Of course, again, without sitting and playing them all it's difficult to know for sure. But I'm put off the AZ series because they have fatter necks too. The S and Quest model Ibanez - some of which are very thin bodies, thin necks, and lightweight (others, like ichi10 more or less have the az neck - it's so complicated trying to figure all of Ibanez differences - but at least they have some differences - yamaha take note) The downside here is that Ibanez don't make a Japanese built Quest, the S models seem out of stock or they, like Strandberg, want some silly money for Indonesia built and I remember all the crying posts I've seen from people with Indonesia built Ibanez that have knobs falling off, unpolished frets, blemishes on the finish yadda yadda yadda. That and the fact the quest series switched to stainless steel frets this year but everyone either still has stocks of the Evo gold or they haven't updated their product page so you don't know which model you're buying new or old.
